Tips To Help You Get A More Restful Night's Sleep

One of the most important things that our bodies need is sleep, and it is also one of those things that gets skipped more often than not. Many people underestimate the amount of sleep that they need, and it causes them to be groggy and fatigued throughout the day, meaning then at night they are less likely to complete their workouts or get things done when they should. If you find that you’re tossing and turning each night or waking up intermittently throughout the night, read our tips to get a better night’s sleep.

Stick to a sleep schedule

This is a big one, if you can consistently go to bed and get up at the same time each night, you’ll find that you will sleep better throughout the night. Part of that could be knowing that you’ll get enough sleep each night, and it also helps to set your body’s internal clock. If you begin waking up without an alarm, at the same time your alarm would go off, you know you are waking up after enough sleep and feeling refreshed. If you still need an alarm, go to bed earlier, and see if it makes a difference.

Limit naps

Naps are one of those things that as adults are a nice treat, but make sure you limit them, otherwise you may toss and turn the following night. If you opt to take a nap, make it early enough that it won’t mess with your sleep cycle, so don’t take a nap too close to your bedtime. You should also limit the amount of time you nap. Napping for several hours will keep you up during the night.

Avoid screens an hour before bed

This cannot be stressed enough. You may think that scrolling through your phone is helping to make you sleepy, but it actually is disrupting your sleep schedule and causing you to toss and turn or wake up in the middle of the night thanks to the blue light from your devices. Instead, pick up a book and read a couple of chapters before bed. It’ll make your eyes tired, which will make you sleep better.

Don’t exercise too close to bedtime

Exercise can actually give you more energy and wake you up, which means if you exercise right before bed, you will struggle to fall asleep with that extra energy. Try to finish your workouts early. If you must workout at night, end the night with a yoga or stretching session, as that can help to promote better sleep.

There are so many ways to get a better night’s sleep, so there really is no excuse for being tired or having a restless night’s sleep. Start with one tip at a time, until you find the best one for you and your body. We are all made differently, and each method won’t work well for everyone.
